Transit maps of the world

Synopsis

This is an amazing collection of transit (metro, subway) maps from around the world, with insightful analysis of the graphic design and information content of the maps, and some history of the major transit systems thrown in for good measure.

The book is divided into 'zones'. In the first zone are the oldest and, mostly, largest systems (London, Tokyo, Chicago, New York, and a few others), each of which gets 4 pages of text and images. Zone 2 follows, newer, smaller systems, given 2 facing pages each. Then to zones 3, 4 etc. with 1 page each, 2 to a page, and so on to the final section where each system (Portland, for example) gets a small paragraph and a very reduced-size map.

This is pure delight for people like me who love subway maps (I recently bought a book named 'Tokyo Subway Guide'). It is a beautifully designed book, excellent typography, thoughtful layout. Highly recommended.
