the author of Plainsong, another novel about hard-scrabble life on the Colorado plateau. This one was his first novel. Impressive and compelling. Somewhat self-consciously Faulknerian in language and structure, but a heck of a good read. His skills with dialogue are impressive and he knows how to tell a story in a way that makes you want to keep listening.
