The Shadow of What We Were

by Luis Sep lveda

Review

September 11 has a very different meaning for Chileans than it does here in the US. On that day in 1973 the Allende government was overthrown by a military coup led by Augusto Pinochet, and Allende committed suicide after a battle at the presidential palace. Over the next days and months thousands of left-wing activists and intellectuals were rounded up, tortured, 'disappeared', and killed. The Pinochet dictatorship remained in power for the next 17 years. The political opposition fled the country.

This story takes place 30 years after the coup. A small group of former activists who have returned to Chile are called together by a former comrade with the intent of carrying out a mission. Things immediately go tragically (yet comically) wrong.
