Norman Pettingill: Backwoods Humorist

by Gary Groth

Review

Pettingill was a sign painter, postcard maker, and sketch artist (as well as occasional hunter and trapper), living in Wisconsin. Most of his work was fairly serious ink on paper drawings of backwoods scenes - bears, deer, forests, lakes, and so on - rendered in terrific detail. His comics, on the other hand, are caricatures of backwoods redneck bumpkins, very reminiscent of R. Crumb (who wrote the introduction to this book), hilarious and revolting by turn.
