Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle

by Chris Hedges

Review

As a regular viewer of Democracy Now, Grit TV, and (until it ended) Bill Moyer's Journal, there's little in this book that I found surprising. But Hedges' clarity and passion, his palpable anger and fear at the corporatization of the world, the inexorable taking over of the state by corporations, makes this a very worthwhile book. I would urge everyone to read this, no matter what your political views - it is an essential book to understanding our present situation and how we got here; how a tiny ruling minority is able to maintain the illusion of democracy while maintaining strict control over our political structures; how the (seemingly) obvious fact of the failure and unsustainability of corporate financial capitalism can be in plain sight yet be invisible to most people.

Really: read this book. Then let's do something together to fight back.
